President Obama is getting a big boost in fundraising from a former opponent.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Obama for America raised $1.8 million in the 24 hours after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” videotape was released Friday. That’s about a quarter of the $4.2 million that Obama raised in the same period in September.

A spokesman for the Obama campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

“This is a game-changer,” said David Wilkins, a political science professor at the University of Michigan-Flint. “People had thought that Mitt Romney was just going to blunder his way to the presidency. They were wrong. The GOP nominee is on a trajectory towards losing and despite all the polling, he is still only leading, and that is after a long, long summer.”

While the other GOP candidates have been campaigning for months, Romney had seen his lead shrink to 5% or less in several national polls after the release of the video.

Obama, in his first debate against Romney on Wednesday, sharply criticized the candidate’s remarks, and both Obama and Romney were critical of their behavior in Thursday’s debate.

“Of course President Obama has raised money from the insurance industry for years now,” Wilkins said. “And of course many of the donors to his campaign are wealthy corporations with major health insurance holdings.”

He said that it would be “better for Obama to have raised money from wealthy businesses rather than the individual sector.”

“Romney can’t run on his job creation record,” Wilkins said. “His income tax returns are long in the tooth, so he can’t come back to it. And that video, his attempt to deflect the attack last week, blew up in his face.

“We have never seen anything like this, a turn of events like this in an election,” Wilkins said.

Rick Tyler, a Republican strategist who managed New Gingrich’s failed 2012 bid, said he expects the Obama campaign will get a bounce.

“The private sector has turned on him,” Tyler said. ”
