The latest round of positive news started with a strong report on the first-quarter gross domestic product.

Nonfarm payrolls were up 40,000 last month, the biggest increase since January. The unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent, from 8 percent in April, and employers added 313,000 jobs. The report suggested that companies are finally starting to snap out of their depressed state.

The jobs report came after several relatively good reports on company and consumer confidence. The Conference Board’s index of confidence in the overall economy was up 6.1 points last month, the strongest level since June.

The International Monetary Fund cut its forecast for global economic growth to 3.3 percent this year from a previous forecast of 3.5 percent. But the IMF said it expects faster growth in the developed world and modest growth in the emerging markets.

“The good news is the world economy is getting better but the bad news is it’s not good everywhere,” says Richard Windsor, director of fixed-income research at Merrill Lynch.

Major stock indexes rose Friday following the upbeat economic data. They have now all surged higher for the year.
