All technology has a front end and a back end. A back end can be of the limits of the browser you are using. That is unfortunate. Initially, it’s way ahead of the market, but eventually it lags behind, being replaced. Expect Linux to follow a pattern similar to GNOME 2, KDE 3, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. Instead of removing features, Linux will focus on security and stability and add features as they mature.
The part where I got confused was the 2.4.28-14.41.el5.x86_64 kernel. That’s the version of the kernel that Debian is using. It’s also the latest version. So do you want to update from 2.4.28-14.41.el5.x86_64 to 2.4.el5.x86_64? That’s not just “updating” but it’s removing linux-image-2.4.28-14-generic and replacing it with linux-image-2.4.el5.x86_64 in order to install linux-image-2.4.el5.x86_64 which is the old version. As Linux is a long lived project, at some point, you’ll have to remove your old kernel if you want to be able to boot.
