Soil samples were obtained during dry flat field conditions using a 2.5×5 cm. sampling frame. The frame was raked forward 30 cm. after making sure that 10 cm. of surface soil had passed through the frame. This ensured that the soil sample included crop debris and surface stubble. Contamination of the sample by crop residues was reduced as much as possible by manually confirming the absence of them in the down-sampled subplots.
Airborne laser measurements at low incident angles were used to estimate the size, axial and vertical deviation of the soil according to the tagged laser footprint, as well as measure the centre-to-edge distance of the laser footprint and the girth of the laser profile. Airborne laser measurements also allowed the determination of the spatially-averaged crop residue height.
The test was carried out in a small polygonal plot of 0.5 ha. The soil type was a clay loam derived formation, while the crop was a mixture of wheat and triticale in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. The field was pre-treated for weed control and liming. Weeds were controlled using a SCYTHONIC GPS-guided sprayer (ARCOM, Germany).
