The features that have been added to the core gameplay of RTS are mixed. On the one hand, it looks like the standard RTS experience; you control an army of units and try to destroy your opponent’s base. But the more impressive additions are found on the macro level. Up to eight players can clash over their prized Arrakis, and the ability for clans and combinations of groups to play together is a first for a game of this size.

In previous versions, the Emperor only controls one or two units. However, in Emperor, the Emperor is shared amongst up to four players, giving the game an RPG-like interface. You’ll still be able to command your units in traditional RTS fashion, but the larger armies also have dozens of other buildings to construct. The buildings protect your units and help them gain bonuses, allowing the Emperor to quickly command his army.

At the heart of Emperor is the Empire Builder. Each player starts with a single army, but can quickly expand it by purchasing or recruiting expansions which unlock larger, more powerful units. Unlike previous Empires, where upgrades generally increased the speed at which your units attacked, Emperor features three new upgrade paths. The first upgrade gives your units the ability to heal each other more quickly, the second helps units gain freedom to manoeuvre more quickly, and the third provides regeneration bonuses, allowing more units to fight once their health has been depleted.

One of the most welcome additions to the game is the inclusion of clans and combinations of groups, new features that give players the ability to play together. Each group is a clan, and the clans of each player are combined to form the player’s playable character. For example, if a player creates a group called Piter Family, they can split their character into two entities, a male and a female, making him a Piter and her a Piter. The Piter controls the male, and the Piter controls the female, allowing players to play with their friends. To help strangers on the battlefield, the Emperor has an oracle, Divination, who provides advanced information on the strengths of other players and their armies.
