These are the rules for playing rugby that you must know
Similar to football, rugby is also a sport played between two teams who try to score by putting the ball into the opposing team’s goal. However, the difference is, in rugby, players can carry the ball, pass it and touch it into the goal area using their hands.
The Origins of the Sport of Rugby
Rugby is a sport originating from England that was discovered in the early 19th century. This sport emerged when a young man from England named William Webb Ellis broke the rules of football by taking the ball in his hands and running it towards the goal line in 1823.
After undergoing slight modifications from Cambridge University, rugby officially became a sport. In 1839, the first rugby team was formed at the university along with its game rules.
Rugby football union was created in 1871 in a pub in London. Various official regulations for the sport were created 10 years later.
In 1895, The Rugby League was formed, indicating that this sport had begun to develop throughout the world.
Required Game Attributes
Rugby is a sport that requires physical strength. This team sport has a total of 15 players per team with several additional people as reserves.
Those wearing shirts with back numbers 1-8 will act as attackers and occupy the front position, while back numbers 9-15 will occupy the back position and act as defenders.
The attributes worn are actually similar to those of a soccer player, namely a t-shirt, shorts, socks and a pair of soccer shoes. However, rugby players also need to wear mouth guards. This is because this sport is full of impact and the jaw or mouth is the part most susceptible to injury.
A rugby ball is similar to an American football ball in that it is slightly oval in shape, but slightly larger. The ball is conical at both ends with a white base color and measures approximately 60 centimeters in diameter and 27 centimeters long.
The length of the field is 100 meters with a width of 70 meters. There is a line called the try which marks the goal, and an end zone which is nine meters after the goal line.
The goal posts are two vertical bars with a length of 22 meters. The goal occurs at the goal post, so if one of the players exceeds it, the ball is considered out.
Rugby Playing Rules
Rugby is often confused with American football because the way of playing is almost the same. However, in rugby, the ball must actually touch the ground (grounded) to score.
Meanwhile, in American football, the ball only needs to cross the goal line and does not need to touch the ground.
So, the aim of this sport game is to touch the ball behind the opponent’s try line which is the area inside the goal. Players can carry the ball using their hands or kick it with their feet.
However, when the ball is carried in the hand, it can only be thrown or handed back.
In rugby, players can score in four ways, namely try, conversion, drop goal and penalty kick. When a player touches the ball to the ground inside the opposing team’s goal area, this is called a try and five points will be awarded to that player’s team.
After a try, the team that scored the goal can also try to convert to score more points by kicking the ball over the crossbar and over the goal post.
Meanwhile, a drop goal is scored when a player bounces the ball to the ground, then kicks it over the crossbar and over the post. After certain types of penalties, a team may be awarded a penalty kick, which is also scored by kicking the ball over the crossbar and over the posts.
Tackles or blocking opponents are allowed. However, even when blocking, opposing players must drop their bodies together with the ball carrier, not slam and don’t forget to visit our site to get other interesting information by click here
